A swipe on an app. One date became many.
Edo: Discipline, perseverance, and patience are important in life. Julie took a mamooth 23 days to reply to my first message, and it took us another 14 days to schedule the first date, as the girl was very busy. What to say, great things take time.
However, coming back from our first date I called my Mom and told her that I had never in my life had so much fun and laughter on a date. Something was different, this time it was fun.
I knew she was the right one early on in our dating history. I invited her for dinner, but my skills in making only Carbonara and Amatriciana became quickly useless as she was vegeterian. So, a bit overconfident maybe, I decided to make a Cacio and Pepe for the first time. With the stakes very high, I failed completely and served her one of the worst meals in the long history of home cooking.
She smiled, made fun of my italian skills, then she finished the plate.
In that lightliness and humor, I knew I was onto something pretty special.

Edo: La disciplina, perseveranza e pazienza sono importanti nella vita. Julie impiegò ben 23 giorni per rispondere al mio primo messaggio, e ci vollero altri 14 giorni per riuscire a fissare il primo appuntamento, dato che era molto impegnata. Che dire, le grandi cose richiedono tempo.
Tornando dal nostro primo appuntamento, chiamai mia madre e le dissi che non mi era mai capitato, in vita mia, di divertirmi e ridere così tanto durante un appuntamento. Qualcosa era diverso: questa volta era divertente.
Capì abbastanza presto nella nostra storia che lei era quella giusta. La invitai a cena, ma le mie capacità culinarie, limitate a carbonara e amatriciana, divennero subito inutili dal momento che lei era vegetariana. Così, forse un po’ troppo sicuro di me, decisi di preparare una cacio e pepe per la prima volta. Con la posta in gioco molto alta, fallii completamente e le servii uno dei peggiori pasti nella lunga storia della cucina casalinga.
Lei sorrise, prese in giro le mie capacità italiane e poi finì il piatto.
In quella leggerezza e in quell’umorismo, capii che avevo trovato qualcosa di davvero speciale.
A date to remember
Julie: On one of our first dates, in the very beginnning. Edo was to come over to my house and we had decided to make dinner together. He had biked over with his backpack on, because his bike doesn't have a basket. Without warning, he pulls out two caketins, each with perfectly proofed pizzadough inside, that he had made the day before in anticipation for our date.
I just remember thinking that if this was how it was going to be dating an italian man - then count me in forever!
We ate the most delicious pizza i'd ever had, and drank a little wine. Edo made me laugh the whole night using his card-magic tricks, and i knew i had found someone pretty special.

Julie: Durante uno dei nostri primi appuntamenti, proprio all’inizio, Edo doveva venire a casa mia e avevamo deciso di cucinare insieme. Era arrivato in bici con lo zaino in spalla, perché la sua bici non ha il cestino. Senza preavviso, tira fuori due teglie, ognuna con un impasto per pizza perfettamente lievitato, che aveva preparato il giorno prima pensando al nostro appuntamento.
Ricordo di aver pensato che, se uscire con un uomo italiano significava questo… allora contatemi dentro per sempre.
Abbiamo mangiato la pizza più buona che avessi mai assaggiato e bevuto un po’ di vino. Edo mi ha fatto ridere tutta la sera con i suoi giochi di magia con le carte, e ho capito di aver trovato qualcuno davvero speciale.
